This is probably one of the questions we get asked the most.
And honestly, I understand it.
When you look at the price of most jerky on the shelf today, ours is expensive by comparison. There’s no way around that. But the truth is, we’re not trying to compete with commodity jerky. We never were.
Sovereign Warrior was built around a very simple idea:
if we were going to make food, we wanted to make something we actually felt proud to feed our family.
That decision affects every part of what we do.
The bison we use for our whole muscle jerky comes from Wild Idea Buffalo. Their animals roam freely on native prairie grasses and are field harvested with care and respect instead of being pushed through conventional industrial systems. That meat costs significantly more than commodity meat because the entire system behind it is different.
For our Bites, we source from Creekside Ranch right here in Darby, Montana, just a few minutes from our facility. Their bison are pasture raised, 100% grass-fed and finished, and never confined. Different ranches, different systems, but both rooted in values that matter deeply to us.
Then there’s the way we actually make the jerky itself.
We slice it ourselves.
We hand trim it ourselves.
We make our marinades from scratch using fresh produce, single ingredients you can recognize, organic spices, and real food instead of artificial flavor systems and shortcuts.
Then we let the meat sit and marinate for a full 24 hours because we’ve found that time allows the flavors to naturally penetrate the meat in a way that simply can’t be rushed.
After that, we dry it ourselves in small batches right here in Montana.
There are definitely easier ways to make jerky.
We could use cheaper meat.
We could use powdered flavor blends and preservatives.
We could outsource production to a large co-packer.
We could cut corners in ways most customers would probably never even notice.
A lot of companies do.
But somewhere along the way, food became almost entirely about efficiency. Faster. Cheaper. More scalable. Longer shelf life. Better margins.
And I think many of us can feel that shift, even if we don’t always have words for it.
Food stopped feeling real.
That’s a big part of why Sovereign Warrior exists in the first place.
Not because we think we’re perfect. And not because we think everyone has to eat exactly the way we do. But because we wanted to create something rooted in more intention and more care than what we kept seeing around us.
Something handcrafted.
Something transparent.
Something connected to real sourcing and real ingredients.
The reality is, making food this way costs more.
Small batch production costs more.
Fresh ingredients cost more.
Better sourcing costs more.
Taking your time costs more.
But to us, those things are worth protecting.
Every choice we make shapes the future we’re creating.
And we believe food is one of the most powerful choices we make every single day.
Your choices are the revolution.
