Why We Chose Tallow

Why We Chose Tallow

When people hear the word tallow, they usually have one of two reactions.

They either grew up with it…

Or they’ve never considered putting it on their skin.

I understand both.

For years, skincare has taught us to look for the newest ingredient.

The newest technology.

The latest breakthrough.

But when we decided to create a skincare line, I found myself asking a different question.

What if we’ve overlooked something that was here all along?

We weren’t looking for the trendiest ingredient.

We were looking for one that reflected the same values we bring to our food.

Simple.

Thoughtfully sourced.

Nourishing.

Crafted with intention.

The more I learned about tallow, the more it made sense.

Not because it’s trendy.

Because it has been trusted for generations.

Long before ingredient lists became pages long.

Long before skincare became complicated.

People relied on tallow to protect and nourish their skin because it was available, effective, and deeply connected to the animals that sustained them.

Somewhere along the way, those traditional ingredients were replaced with products built around inexpensive oils, synthetic fragrances, fillers, and ingredients most of us can’t pronounce.

Innovation has brought many wonderful advancements to skincare, and there are incredible modern ingredients that we use and appreciate.

But I also believe there’s value in rediscovering ingredients that have quietly stood the test of time.

For us, tallow became the foundation.

Not because it’s the only good ingredient.

But because it’s one we trust.

Of course, not all tallow is the same.

Just as the source matters in food, it matters in skincare.

The quality of the fat begins long before we ever render it.

That’s why we source our kidney fat from Wild Idea Buffalo.

Their bison spend their lives roaming thousands of acres of native prairie, grazing on a diverse variety of grasses and plants just as they were meant to. They aren’t confined to feedlots or finished on grain. They live according to the rhythms of nature, helping regenerate the very grasslands they depend on.

When it’s time for harvest, they’re field harvested where they live, avoiding the stress of transportation and conventional industrial systems.

That philosophy matters to us.

We believe an animal’s natural diet, healthy environment, and the respect with which it’s raised all contribute to the quality of the fat it produces. That’s why we believe the source shapes everything that follows.

Once the fat reaches our facility, we continue that same philosophy.

We dry render our tallow in small batches rather than introducing water into the rendering process. We also keep our temperatures as low as possible throughout rendering because our goal isn’t simply to make tallow—it’s to preserve the integrity of an ingredient we’ve carefully sourced from the very beginning.

From there, we build our formulas with the same intention.

Every ingredient has a purpose.

Rosehip for its nourishing fatty acids.

Jojoba for balance.

Seabuckthorn for its vibrant antioxidant profile.

Frankincense because we love both its aroma and its long history in skincare.

We don’t add ingredients simply because they’re popular.

We choose them because they complement one another and contribute something meaningful to the final balm.

To us, making tallow skincare isn’t about going backward.

It’s about bringing together traditional wisdom and thoughtful modern formulation.

It’s about slowing down enough to ask where our ingredients come from.

How they’re produced.

And whether we’d feel good using them ourselves every single day.

Just as we’ve become disconnected from where our food comes from, I think many of us have become disconnected from what we put on our skin.

Our skin is our largest organ.

It deserves the same thoughtfulness we give the food we eat.

That’s why we make our balms the same way we make our jerky.

With carefully sourced ingredients.

Small-batch craftsmanship.

Transparency.

And a willingness to do things the slower way if it leads to a better product.

Because the source matters.

The process matters.

The ingredients matter.

And ultimately, the choices we make matter.

Your choices are the revolution.
